ABOUT THE ARTIST

image Paula Morikami was blessed to have been born and raised on the beautiful Hawaiian Island of Kauai, where she lives and works today. She earned her BA in Sociology from Whittier College in California and returned home to Kauai where she worked on the island in various management positions in the travel industry and later as a land use consultant. Paula also served as a Kauai County Councilwoman, and as a member of the State House of Representatives. Her varied careers led her to finally follow her artistic calling.

Creating these glass art pendants has become her full-time passion and her love for dichroic glass and geometric designs is evident in her creations. Paula hand-cuts pieces of glass, creating the layers of dramatic color, and then fuses the pieces together in a kiln that is heated up to 1,500 degrees. Her son, Lee, works with her as an apprentice. All of her pendants are fired at least twice, and the smoothness and silkiness of the finished piece has to be felt. Each pendant is one-of-a-kind. Paula’s signature pieces feature a framed look around the center of the pendant. She says, “I enjoy designing and creating big, bold pendants which have depth and dimension using the vibrant colors of Hawaii’s rainbows, sunsets, lush vegetation, and ocean waters.”

Her work has a uniqueness that comes with the love of creating and for trying new things. Her creations are easily identifiable by their depth, dramatic use of color, and her signature on the back of each piece. Paula has many customers who visit her year after year, adding to their collection, and is humbled by the response to her creations. Her pendants are truly pieces of wearable art, sure to capture attention and compliments for the wearer.
